10 Symptoms Of Low Blood Sugar

Low blood sugar, also known by its academic name of hypoglycemia, is a condition when a person’s blood sugar levels drop below normal levels. There are no fixed standards to define hypoglycemia and the particular levels that indicate low blood sugar can vary from person to person. Usually, for people with diabetes, hypoglycemia occurs when blood sugar levels are below 3.9 mmol/l or 70 mg/dl. While for others, it happens at 2.8 mmol/l or 50 mg/dl.

Low Blood Sugar is often related to diabetes because patients with diabetes usually take insulin or other medications to control their blood sugar levels. However, taking too much of such medicines can cause a person’s blood sugar to drop too low. These patients are often asked to eat less and exercise more, increasing their risk of hypoglycemia.

Besides diabetes, other causes of hypoglycemia include excessive alcohol consumption, liver disease, certain tumors, and hormone deficiencies. To prevent hypoglycemia, eating frequent small meals has been proven to be an effective method. You should seek professional advice from a doctor if symptoms are too severe though.

Low Blood Sugar Symptom #1: Palpitations Or Tachycardia

If you feel your heart is beating too hard or too fast, skipping a beat, or fluttering, you may be experiencing palpitations. Palpitations are often associated with tachycardia, which is the medical term for an abnormally fast heartbeat.

Low blood sugar is a common cause of palpitations and tachycardia, but it is not the only one. Many other diseases like low blood pressure can also trigger an abnormal heartbeat. If you are experiencing any heart related symptoms, you should see a doctor right away.
