10 Signs and Symptoms of Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis is inflammation in the pancreas. There are two types of pancreatitis: acute pancreatitis and chronic pancreatitis. Acute pancreatitis occurs suddenly without any warning, while chronic pancreatitis occurs over many years.

Pancreatitis can happen to anyone, but some factors may increase the risks. In most cases, acute pancreatitis is caused by the accumulation of gallstones. Gallstones cause inflammation of the pancreas as stones pass through and get stuck in a pancreatic duct. Other causes include hereditary conditions, medications, infections, and metabolic disorders.

The main factor that leads to chronic pancreatitis is long-term alcohol consumption. Hereditary disorders of the pancreas, smoking, certain medications and high blood-calcium levels also increase the risk of chronic pancreatitis.

Pancreatitis Symptom #1: Abdominal Pain

Stomach pain is a common symptom for both acute and chronic pancreatitis. The pain happens in the upper middle left side of the abdomen and may reach the left shoulder blade before spreading down to the lower back.

Stomach pain caused by pancreatitis is different from normal stomach ache since it goes on continuously for several days if immediate treatment is not sought. If you are continuously experiencing upper left abdominal pain for several days, it is recommended that you visit the doctor for some advice.
